Advanced Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer Investigational Treatment

Many prostate cancers are found early, before they have spread beyond the prostate to other parts of the body. Early prostate cancer may be treated with surgery, radiation, or both. After surgery or radiation, most doctors recommend frequent blood tests and physical exams to watch for recurrent prostate cancer. Prostate cancer that is not found in the early stage or that has come back after surgery or radiation is generally treated with drugs. These prostate cancers are considered to be advanced prostate cancer.

Current Hormonal Treatments for Advanced Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer cells depend on male hormones called androgens to grow and survive. That’s why many prostate cancer treatments control androgens, such as testosterone, in your body.

These hormonal treatments include:

  • injections that stop the production of androgens
  • surgery to remove the testicles, where most androgens come from (orchiectomy)
  • anti-androgen pills that block the ability of cancer cells to use androgens to grow
s

These treatments can make prostate cancer shrink or grow more slowly. After a few years, hormonal therapy often stops working and the cancer starts to grow again or progress. This is called hormone refractory prostate cancer or hormone resistant prostate cancer. This is when other treatments are considered.

Have you been treated with chemotherapy?

One treatment for hormone resistant prostate cancer is chemotherapy. If you have NOT been treated with chemotherapy, you may be able to join the PREVAIL Trial. The PREVAIL Trial is testing an investigational drug called MDV3100 to see if it can safely slow the progression of the disease and extend the lives of men with prostate cancer.

Participating in a clinical research trial can help develop new prostate cancer treatment choices in the fight against the disease.
